Dukhtaran-e-Millat (DeM) secretary general Nahida Nasreen Thursday lashed out at Indian media and Indian policy makers for “fooling” its people and “misleading” the world forum, United Nations (UN).

Referring to the statement of Permanent counsellor in the Indian Mission to the U N, Mayank Joshi, that “India is the world’s largest democracy and free and fair elections are held regularly in Jammu and Kashmir”, Nasreen said, “India was misleading the world forum and back home its propaganda machinery, Indian media, is fooling its own people with regards to the issue of Jammu Kashmir.”

Strongly rejecting India’s “ritual propaganda” on the elections and the ‘baseless’ allegations made by it, Nasreen said, “if mere 1% incident happens in Kashmir which is in favour of India, Indian media and its machinery highlights it and blows it out of proportion while when 99% incidents happen against it, it prefers not to talk about it.”

“The governments in Jammu and Kashmir were never elected,” she said and added, “during the days of polling Kashmir reels under curfews and hartals.”

“How can such elections be termed fair?” she asked. “If at all governments were elected in Kashmir, then why have more than 1 lakh civilians died since 1989? Which government kills its own people? Which government blinds its own people? Why has governor’s rule been imposed time and again in Kashmir when uprisings took place here?”

“In many other states of India where mobsters go on rampage, water cannons are used while as in Kashmir people face bullets, pellets, teargas shells and PAVA shells,” she observed.

Nasreen said, “this happens only when the fight is between Zalim (Oppressor) and Mazloom (Oppressed).” “The last three and a half months are witness to the fact that people are with Hurriyat (Conference) and therefore with the right to self-determination.”

“People in every nook and corner of the valley have followed the Hurriyat (Conference) calendar in letter and spirit,” she adding, “if they say the government is elected here, then why has it failed?”

Nasreen further asked, “if government of India claims Jammu Kashmir is its internal matter and that free and fair elections were held here, then why doesn’t it allow the UN fact finding mission to visit Kashmir. They are fooling their own people and misleading the world forums.” “Why is there need for AFSPA to be in place when India claims Kashmir to be its integral part?”
