Police waited for five hours in a cordoned Tujjar village and eventually managed to arrest the holed up militant alive. He was identified as Umar Mir, a local resident, who had joined militancy in 2016.

Informed sources told Kashmir Life that police received a tip-off about the presence of a militant in Tujjar and the entire cluster of houses was immediately cordoned off by police, CRPF and army. The cordon was effectively in place at 5 pm.

After the cordon was in place, a police officer got the cell phone of the holed up militant and talked to him. He was asked to “surrender” on the condition that there will not be any gun battle.

In the second stage, the police sent the head of the family in whose house Mir was trapped. Still unsure of the police, Mir finally sought his father who was sent in. “It was this man identified as Abdul Khaliq, also a local resident, who assured his son that police will not kill him if he surrenders,” sources said. “He finally gave up at around 10 pm.”

Mir has been driven to Sopore in custody. Initial details suggest that he had crossed over to the other side in May 2016 and had “returned with arms” only a month back. A Lashkar recruit, Mir has studied up to twelfth. Apparently, he has no case registered against him.
