Ruling coalition partner, PDP’s senior politician Mohammad Rafi Ahmad Mir on Thursday demanded that the government should take in account the sensitivities of the people and defer the annual board examinations.
“In absence of conducive political atmosphere where there is a war of opinion among the political section of the society, education has become the biggest causality,” Mir said in a statement issued early this evening.
He said it was heart wrenching to see that the students hit the street and clean windscreens of vehicles to register their protests.
“Since the government is the custodian of the people, it ought to know the pulse of the people and any iron fisted response to their sensitivities can push them to the wall,” he said, “we expect the government to understand various constraints of the students, who are in a situation for no fault of theirs and Government must take a step for its own people and defer the exams at par with CBSE session.”
“Parents are concerned over performance of their children who have to compete with students across the country for higher education and concerns of safety also precipitate,” he said.
While acknowledging the steps taken by the government to defuse the crisis, Mir, however, called on the government to renew its efforts to decisively, clearly and substantively to address the issues raised by the students and parents.
He sought cooperation from civil society to build consensus in patching the education sector.
Terming youth as stake holders, Mir sought unconditional amnesty for students languishing in jails, who have been detained over few months.
Stating that reformative measures need to be adopted, he said that it will send a strong message about the government’s intention to end the cycle of political unrest.
