Hurriyat patriarch Syed Ali Geelani on Thursday marched towards Mazaar-e-Shohada at Eidgah to pay tributes to “martyrs” of 2008, 10 and 2016.
The united resistance camp had asked people to march towards Eidgah to pay tributes to martyrs of Kashmir especially Sheikh Abdul Aziz who was killed by forces on August 11, 2008 on way to Muzaffarabad at Uri.
Reports said that as soon as Geelani concluded Namaz-e-Zuhr, he along with some of his party activists marched towards Eidgah.
“He was stopped by police and was told that he was banned from proceeding towards Eidgah,” sources said, “Geelani sahab didn’t relent but he was whisked away in a jeep.”
It has been routine of the government to detain Geelani whenever he tries to take out any protest march. Since July 09, a day after popular militant commander Burhan Wani was killed, government foiled several protest marches by detaining resistance leadership.
