At least 17 civilians were injured when forces including CRPF and police fired tear gas canisters and pellets to disperse the people who assembled to hold a pro-freedom rally in Qazigund area of South Kashmir.

Reports reaching here said that a pro-freedom rally was scheduled to be held at Four-way Chuymul in Qazigund and a stage was set up the locals.

“However, police and CRPF raided the venue around 2 AM and clashes erupted as volunteers were patrolling the area,” a local from the area said.

He added that the clashes are going on this time as well. “At least 17 civilian s were injured when forces targeted them with pellets,” he said, “majority of them were treated locally for the fear of reprisal.”

Locals said that four pellet hit injured were shifted to hospital. “One pellet hit victim was referred to Islamabad district hospital for advanced treatment,” Dr Shan said. “His left eye was damaged after being hit by pellets.”

The doctor identified the injured as Muzaffar Ahmad Wani, s/o Mohammad Yusuf Wani, who is 23-year-old youth, a resident of Wagund Qazigund.

“As clashes ensued and have not stopped since last mid-night, people assembled in a nearby walnut orchard at Taargom,” locals said.

They informed that huge deployment of forces has been made on Srinagar-Jammu highway and “no one was being allowed to come over the major road.”
