A scheduled pro-freedom rally was attacked by forces in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Sunday.
Reports reaching here said that people of Manzgam had planned a massive pro-freedom rally today and hundreds of people were expected to attend it.
However, army, CRPF and police men reached the area this morning and started tear gas shelling and pellet firing.
“We are yet making preparations for the rally when huge contingents of Rashtriya Rifles, CRPF and police came,” a local said.
He said that forces started shelling tear gassing and youths responded with stones.
“Intense clashes erupted in which many people were injured,” he said, however, could not divulge exact details of injured civilians.
Besides severe restrictions in place, the area is facing mobile connectivity problem. Government has banned all private cellular companies from giving services and only BSNL Post-paid SIMs are working.
“We are facing huge problem in contacting people in Kulgam as even BSNL phones are not working,” several news reporters working in South Kashmir said.
