In a major clampdown on proposed march towards Shopian district headquarter, authorities imposed severe restrictions in the South Kashmir district on Sunday.
The unified resistance leadership had asked people from South Kashmir to march towards Shopian town today to hold a pro-freedom rally.
“Police vans made rounds of the town as early as 4:30 AM,” a local said, “they announced through loudspeakers installed on police vans asking people to stay indoors.:”
The local said that police made repeated announcements that curfew has been imposed in the district and “anyone trying to violate orders will be severely dealt with”.
He said that huge deployment of army, CRPF and police has been made across the district. “In the main town, men in uniform are seen at entrance of every lane and by-lane.”
The local sources further said that forces have brought in bull-dozers, tractors and other machinery to “clear the blockade if anywhere”.
People have erected blockade across Kashmir in order to restrict movement of forces “for the fear of arrests”.
“They first bull-doze the blockade and then take away the debris along with them in the vehicles,” local said.
