Disturbed Areas Act (DAA) 1997 is not in force in Jammu and Kashmir. This was stated by the government on Tuesday in the legislative Council.

Council chairman, Amrit Malhotra said that the Disturbed Areas Act 1997 was valid for only one year and has lapsed on October 7, 1998.

He was responding to the resolution brought by the National Conference member, Bashir Ahmad Veeri. Rejecting the resolution regarding revocation of DAA the chairman said, “at present the DAA is not in force in the state.”

Veeri who raised the issue in the House and batted strongly for a debate stood up from the seat and walked into Well to protest against the decision of the Chairman.

“I had moved resolution to adjourn the business and allow a discussion on this important issue which has serious and wider ramifications,” he said.

However, Malhotra said, “I have rejected the resolution after giving full reply so there is no need of any discussion.” Veeri was marshaled out of the house as he continued with his protest.
