The Election Commission of India has once again deferred by-polls of South Kashmir’s Islamabad assembly constituency.

The polls to the assembly seat were scheduled to be held on June 19, however, the ECI has deferred polls by two days and are to be held on June 22 now.

Reports cited death anniversary of Qazi Nisar has forced the government to convey its inability to go for the polls on June 19 when the anniversary of slain Nisar falls.

The Islamabad seat fell vacant after former CM Mufti Mohammad Sayeed breathed his last on June 07 early this year in AIIMS New Delhi.

Sitting Lok Sabha Member and CM Ms Mehbooba Mufti is fighting elections from the seat while seven others are also in the fray.

Earlier, the ECI had scheduled the polls in May but were deferred to June 19 because PDP-BJP government had cited “law and order issue”.

National Conference has fielded Iftikhar Misger while Hilal Shah of Congress will be fighting Ms Mufti. Independent lawmaker from Langate too has joined the fray.
