SRINAGAR: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday allowed Ladakhi activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is on a hunger strike over the alleged NEET examination paper leak, to be shifted from the state-run Safdarjung Hospital to the private Medanta Hospital, observing that his concerns could not be ignored.

The court said it would pass the formal order later in the day. During the hearing, it asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, why Wangchuk should not be transferred to Medanta. Mehta informed the court that the Centre had no objection to the move but said the transfer required government approval.
Following the court’s decision, Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, thanked the Delhi High Court in a post on X, describing the order as a favourable decision to shift him to “the hospital of our choice”. She also expressed gratitude to senior advocate Akhil Sibal and the legal team representing Wangchuk.
Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike in support of demands for systemic educational reforms and accountability over the alleged NEET examination paper leak.
Earlier this week, he was removed by Delhi Police from the protest site at Jantar Mantar and admitted to Safdarjung Hospital. Police had said the action was taken following directions from the Delhi High Court, which instructed the authorities to take necessary steps to safeguard his life.
The matter came before the High Court after concerns were raised over Wangchuk’s health and requests were made for his treatment at a hospital chosen by his family.
