SRINAGAR

After the fatal attack on eminent cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon Dr Abdul Ahad Guru in 1991-92, Dr Sheikh Jalal ud Din is the second senior faculty member of SKIMS, an eminent cardiologist who has been shot dead by unidentified gunman.

A month after he was critically injured in a suspected militant attack in his hometown Pampore, near Srinagar on July 18, Dr Jalal died after cardiac arrest in the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Saturday August 17, 2013 morning.

The body, embalmed after post-mortem was flown to Srinagar early on Sunday, where amid wails and cries funeral was performed. Kashmir Life’s Photo Chief Bilal Bahadur Captures the pain and agony in Saffron town of Pampore.

Last Journey. Son of soil, leading cardiologist Dr Jalal had treated thousands of the heart patients at hospital as well at his Srinagar and Pampore clinics free of charges. The bullets silenced the man who used to treat the illness and giving new lease of life to ailing.

Mourning. There are different versions about the attack but the fact is that our prized intellectuals and professionals are still being killed at will. In Dr Jalal Kashmir lost a man who otherwise is born one among thousands. Well said by a senior journalist, “ I am sure Dr Guru and Dr Jalal must have cured one or the other relatives or family members of their heartless killers if they are natives.”

RIP. Director of the prestigious tertiary care hospital, Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), in Srinagar for three years after heading the Department of Cardiology and working as Dean of the Medical Faculty for over 15 years. It was at the AIIMS, that he had got his degree of Doctor of Medicine in Cardiology in the 1980s.

Grief. Though no body claimed responsibility for the attack in which eyes, chest, lungs and other organs of Dr Jalal were severely damaged. Put on life support system for nearly one month, Dr Jalal developed infection in the lungs which led to multiple organ failure.
