SRINAGAR: Uttar Pradesh Police have arrested Nazir Ahmad Wani, a Pakistan-trained Hizbul Mujahideen militant, who had been evading capture for 31 years. Wani was apprehended in Kashmir’s Budgam district with the assistance of Jammu and Kashmir Police, following a long-standing search linked to two cases from Saharanpur dating back to 1993 and 1994.
As per a report in CNN-News 18, Wani is accused of attacking a police party with a grenade in 1993, injuring several personnel. He was initially arrested in this case but later released on bail. Additionally, he had forged an identity card under the instructions of the Hizbul Mujahideen, prompting authorities to file a chargesheet in absentia in the forgery case, leading to a warrant issued by the CJM court.
The report quoted a source saying, “His background is being checked as the arrest took place after 31 years of FIR registration.”
Notably, Wani had also contested the assembly elections from Budgam on an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ticket, further complicating his profile.
The arrest was executed under proper legal procedures, with Jammu and Kashmir Police locating and formally handing him over to the Saharanpur Police. “The subject was located and handed over to the police party under proper formalities,” the source informed.
