A retired police officer, who was shot at and critically injured by suspected militants in Kulgam district of South Kashmir on Tuesday night, succumbed to injuries at a hospital here in this capital city.

A police official told GNS that Bashir Ahmad Dar, a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police was critically wounded after fired from close range by motorcycle borne gunmen in Ashmujee village of the district late Tuesday night. He was coming out of the local Masjid after offering late night prayers (Tarawiah) when the militants fired random shots at him.

The ex-DSP had sustained multiple injuries in the surprise attack and was instantly removed to the Srinagar’s SMHS hospital for treatment.

The former cop had retired from service in 2012.

The incident took place at about 12:30 AM during Shab-e-Qadr.

“The retired police officer succumbed to injuries at the hospital, hours after he was taken there. He had received shots in abdomen, leg and shoulder,” a senior police officer said.

The deceased, the police officer said has served at different positions in the Crime Branch, Vigilance and the Dy SP headquarters during his tenure.

The officer said that after the attack, the militants fled from the spot taking advantage of the darkness

The attack on the retired police officer came hours after a panch, Mohammad Yaqoob Malla, was shot at and injured by gunmen in the neighbouring Shopian district.
