SRINAGAR: A fresh spell of rainfall has developed over parts of the Jammu region and is expected to spread to south Kashmir later on Thursday, while another round of rain is likely to affect Jammu and Kashmir after the current weather system passes, an independent weather forecaster said.
Faizan Arif Keng said the latest rain-bearing system became active around 8:00 a.m. and is moving in a north-easterly direction. He said the weather system is expected to primarily affect Samba, Kathua, Udhampur and the Chenab Valley over the next few hours before advancing towards parts of south Kashmir.
According to Keng, rainfall is likely to intensify over south Kashmir due to favourable atmospheric conditions. He added that after the present system weakens and moves away, another spell of rain is expected to affect the Union Territory on Friday, extending the ongoing wet weather.
The forecaster attributed the prevailing conditions to an active Western Disturbance, which continues to enhance cloud development and increase moisture incursion over the region.
Meanwhile, a moderate spell of rainfall was recorded in parts of south Kashmir during the past 12 hours, prompting expectations that the upward trend in the Jhelum River’s water level will continue through the day.
Jammu and Kashmir has been witnessing persistent heavy rainfall over the past several days, resulting in a sharp rise in the water levels of rivers, streams and nallahs across the Union Territory.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and avoid vulnerable, flood-prone and landslide-prone areas as the prolonged wet spell continues to affect the region.
