SRINAGAR: Fresh snowfall was reported at the high-altitude Wari La and Pensi La passes in Ladakh on Wednesday, as an unusual weather system affected the region, prompting authorities to advise motorists to exercise caution while travelling.
The snowfall, which occurred in July, has been reported across several high-altitude mountain passes, an uncommon development during the summer season in Ladakh, which typically receives little precipitation during the monsoon.
Meanwhile, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Leh has issued a travel advisory effective from July 22 to July 25, urging tourists to postpone all non-essential travel in view of the prevailing weather conditions.
The advisory warns of the possibility of flash floods, mudslides and landslides in the lower-altitude areas due to heavy rainfall associated with an active monsoon system.
Authorities have advised motorists travelling through Wari La, Pensi La and other high-altitude routes to drive with extreme caution and follow official advisories. They have also urged residents and visitors to monitor weather updates and avoid vulnerable areas until conditions improve.
