SRINAGAR

While expressing dismay over the fresh raids and arrests of pro-freedom leaders and workers by the police, Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani has flayed the police chief claims that ‘with respect the upcoming elections, no one would be arrested from the pro-freedom camp but to its contrary they (police) have formally started the crackdown on the pro-freedom camp in the valley’.

According to a statement issued to KNS, Geelani has said that this crackdown has started particularly in Baramulla and Islamabad Districts and about a dozen pro-freedom activists have been arrested, many have been imprisoned in their homes and they are continuously raiding the residence of some other pro-freedom leaders and activists.

He said that the election drama which is going to be held in Jammu and Kashmir, is actually a military operation and a one sided game and the press statement of police chief is only to hide the ground realities.

While giving details of the arrests, Geelani said that Mohammad Shafi Mir, Mushtaq Ahmad Mir, Abdul Rouf Magray, Aadil Ahmad, Ishfaq Ahmad and Showkat Ahmad of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat in Islamabad District have been arrested while as Asadullah Parray, Mehraj-ud-din Nanda and Molvi Sajad of Muslim League have been arrested in Baramulla District.

Geelani said that the pro-freedom leadership are running its election boycott campaign in a peaceful manner and are informing the general public about its (election) negative effects, but the government by using state power is not allowing us to do so which proves our stand that this election drama is only a military operation rather than a democratic process. While reminding the police chief about his promise that no one will be arrested from the freedom camp on the election and they will be given a chance to present their view in front of people in a peaceful manner.

Geelani said that the state of Jammu and Kashmir is directly ruled by the authorities in New Delhi and they decide that who should be arrested and who should be imprisoned in his house and these press statements are only to cover the undemocratic and immoral ways of stopping the peaceful movement
