SRINAGAR: Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar has appointed 14 new Heads of Departments (HoDs) across various medical and super-speciality disciplines as part of a major administrative reshuffle aimed at implementing the institution’s rotational headship policy.
The appointments were made through Order No. 125-GS of 2026, issued on June 17 by Principal and Dean, GMC Srinagar, Professor (Dr) Iffat Hassan Shah. The changes take immediate effect.
According to the order, the appointments have been made in accordance with Government Order No. 527-JK (HME) of 2023 and a communication issued by the Health and Medical Education Department on June 16, 2026.
Under the new arrangement, Professor (Dr) Afroz Ahmad Khan has been appointed Head of the Department of Ophthalmology until May 31, 2028, while Professor (Dr) Lateef Ahmad Wani will head the Department of Pathology until June 16, 2028. Professor (Dr) Mohd Ismail has taken charge of General Medicine and Professor (Dr) Suhail Ahmad Gilkar of Physiology, with both tenures extending until June 16, 2028.
Professor (Dr) MR Attri has been appointed Head of the Department of Surgery until November 30, 2027, while Professor (Dr) Javid Iqbal Naqshbandi will lead the Department of Anaesthesiology until April 30, 2028.
Other appointments include Professor (Dr) Khurshid Ahmad Dar as Head of Respiratory Medicine, Professor (Dr) Bashir Ahmad Shah for Anatomy, Professor (Dr) Showkat Ahmad Showkat for ENT, Professor (Dr) Mushtaq G Nabi for Radiation Oncology, Professor (Dr) Roohi Ashraf for Biochemistry and Professor (Dr) Anjum Iqbal Pandit for Community Medicine. Their tenures will continue until June 16, 2028.
Professor (Dr) Imtiyaz Hussain Dar has been appointed Head of Orthopaedics until April 30, 2027, while Professor (Dr) Bashir Ahmad Naikoo will head the Cardiology Department until May 31, 2028.
