SRINAGAR: The Government of India has addressed concerns about the potential impact of automation and artificial intelligence (AI) on job growth in the country. In response to a question raised by AD Singh in the Rajya Sabha on December 19, the Ministry of Labour and Employment highlighted that while AI and automation may automate certain routine jobs, they are also fostering job creation in emerging fields such as data science and curation.

Citing data from the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) conducted by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, the government reported a positive trend in employment indicators. The Worker Population Ratio (WPR) for individuals aged 15 and above has risen from 46.8 per cent in 2017–18 to 58.2 per cent in 2023–24, reflecting an overall improvement in employment levels.

The government is actively working to address the challenges posed by automation through reskilling initiatives. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has launched the FutureSkills PRIME programme to equip IT professionals with skills in ten emerging technologies, including AI. Over 18.56 lakh candidates have registered for this programme, with more than 3.37 lakh completing their courses. Additionally, Centres of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence, implemented in collaboration with NASSCOM, are supporting startups in developing AI tools and applications for the manufacturing sector.

Efforts are also being made to engage the younger generation through the ‘YUVAi: Youth for Unnati and Vikas with AI’ programme. Targeting school students from classes 8 to 12, this initiative aims to develop AI and social skills while addressing key sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, and education.

To support broader employment opportunities, the National Career Service (NCS) Portal provides job search and matching services, career counselling, and information on skill development programmes, further reinforcing the government’s commitment to building job-oriented infrastructure, the government added.
