Government must listen to Aganwari Workers: NC

Srinagar

National Conference Friday expressed solidarity with the Anganwadi workers and demanded that their genuine demands be immediately looked into.

Lashing out at the State Government for failing to break the deadlock NC south Zone President and former minister Sakina Itoo said, “PDP BJP government must listen to the demands of protesting Aganwari workers and help find an amicable and productive solution.”

“The Anganwadi workers have immensely contributed in making the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) viable in the State but they have been pushed to the wall due to the insensitive approach of the current State Government towards them. Needless to say Aganwari workers form the backbone of the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) and other social welfare schemes and therefore deserve empathy,” Itoo said.

“The State Government doesn’t seem to have invested any effort in talking about the issues of Anganwadi workers due to which they have decided to hold an indefinite hunger strike till their demands are met and since the Anganwadi workers and helpers have suspended work, it is matter of serious concern for us and will result in a collapse in the system that will eventually make people suffer because of the Government’s inability to resolve this issue with the protesting workers”, she further added.

The south zone president asked the Government to invite representatives of the protesting Aganwari Workers for talks in a respectful and dignified manner in a sincere and open-minded effort to resolve their issues and fulfill their just demands at the earliest.

Meanwhile District president Srinagar Peer Afaq Ahmad also impressed upon the present dispensation to immediately resolve the issue with protesting Aganwari workers. “It pains us to see young and old women protesting on streets and demanding decent wages for themselves when it was the administration which should have preempted this considering how situation has changed over these years. Government therefore needs to acknowledge these demands and resolve the conflict without further confrontation.”
