In a reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, the Ministry of Education revealed that 30,415 schools are currently affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) across India, with ongoing efforts to increase this number through the establishment of new regional offices. One of the most notable developments is the upcoming establishment of a Sub-Regional Office in Jammu and Kashmir, which will play a crucial role in expanding CBSE-affiliated schools in the region.

This new office will provide greater accessibility for students and schools in Jammu and Kashmir to the board’s services, helping streamline affiliations and enhance educational quality. The Jammu and Kashmir administration is set to provide the land and building for the new office, marking a significant milestone in the region’s educational infrastructure.

As of December 13, 2024, Jammu and Kashmir is home to 43 CBSE-affiliated secondary schools and 135 senior secondary schools. The region has seen a steady presence of government and private institutions under the CBSE umbrella. There are currently five government schools, one government-aided school, and 24 independent private institutions in the secondary category, while the senior secondary level includes 16 government schools, three government-aided institutions, and 73 private schools. The creation of the new Sub-Regional Office in the region is expected to streamline processes, make the affiliation process more accessible, and further encourage more schools to join the CBSE network.

Nationally, the efforts to expand CBSE’s reach are not limited to Jammu and Kashmir. The board is opening six new regional offices and six sub-regional offices to further extend its outreach and improve student enrolment. The CBSE’s push to increase enrolment across its affiliated schools is driven by its reputation for academic excellence, a standardized curriculum, and robust support for competitive examinations. The board’s national presence, coupled with its focus on skill development and flexible subject choices, is expected to lead to a broader national impact on enrolment trends in the coming years. The initiatives, which include efforts to reach underserved regions, demonstrate the Government of India’s commitment to ensuring that quality education is accessible to every corner of the country.
