The Minister said, “The government is committed to the welfare of persons with disabilities in JK. We are considering an increase in the monthly pension for physically disabled individuals.”

She revealed that the region currently has only two schools for specially abled individuals—one in Kashmir and one in Jammu. “We plan to increase this number to improve access to education for disabled children,” Itoo added.

The government also intends to provide low-interest loans to disabled persons, enabling them to start their ventures and earn a dignified livelihood. “Many possess remarkable skills, such as painting and craftsmanship. We aim to provide them with proper training to hone these skills and ensure their independence,” the Minister stated.

Ministerial Event Highlights

The announcements were made during an event organized by Samagra Shiksha, J&K at the Convention Centre in Srinagar, marking International Day of Persons with Disabilities-2024.

Acknowledging the strength and resilience of individuals with disabilities, Itoo emphasized the importance of inclusivity and support. “We must ensure better access to education, healthcare, employment, and public spaces for disabled individuals. Like everyone else, they have the right to a dignified and fulfilling life,” she said.

This year’s theme, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” underscored the need for creating a disability-inclusive society. Itoo highlighted the importance of breaking societal stereotypes and celebrating diversity.

Commending the talent displayed by differently abled students during the event, Itoo remarked, “These children have shown us their incredible abilities. Disability should not be seen as a limitation but as an opportunity to showcase hidden talent.”

She also praised caregivers, parents, and families for their unwavering support, which she described as essential for empowering persons with disabilities.

Support from Government and NGOs

The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing the needs of persons with disabilities and called on NGOs to enhance their on-ground activities. She stressed the effective utilisation of government grants to aid disabled persons.

The event concluded with Itoo distributing motorised tricycles and scooters to beneficiaries of the Social Welfare Department.
