Castigating Chief Minister Omar Abdullah over the promises he made to the people before 2008 elections,PDP Thursday asked Omar that what happened to the slogans of ‘meter hatao, heater logao’ that Omar raised at that time.

The reports recived by Kashmir News Service mentioned that senior PDP leader and former Finance Minister, Tariq Hameed Karra while urging the youth to spearhead the movement for change, accused that the state’s young population has become the biggest victim of the tyrannical policies of the present government as they are being subjected to collective punishment.

“Besides getting victimized collectively by the repressive policies of the present government, the state’s youth are being subjected to economic subjugation by depriving them the opportunities of employment and other income-generating avenues,” Karra said while addressing a PDP workers convention at Shalbugh here.

He further accused that a culture of waywardness and drug abuse is being promoted among the youth under a clandestine plan to incapacitate them. He said by corrupting various institutions including BOPEE and recruiting agencies, the present government is pushing the youth towards a perpetual state of despair and uncertainty. “After pushing the youth into despondency, NC then exploits them for short-term political gains,” he said and added that as a part of its well-designed ploy to impose economic subjugation on the people, the present regime is devising all the devious means to push Kashmiris into perpetual political enslavement. Reminding the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of the promises made by him personally with the people during electioneering, Karra said on November 21, 2008, Omar while campaigning in his home constituency of Ganderbal had declared that if voted to power his party would work for providing relief to common man by slashing the prices of the essential commodities including electricity. “Besides addressing the issues of unemployment by making 2 lakh recruitments in the first 2 years of government NC would bring a sigh of relief to Aam Adami battered by soaring prices of commodities. Karra said the slogan of “Meter Hatao Aur Heater Lagao” coined by Omar Abdullah himself during 2008 electioneering in Srinagar had become very catchy and the time has come for the people to remind the NC leadership of what happened to those promises. The latest penalizing power curtailment imposed by the Government in Kashmir is indicative of the complete breakdown of the state’s administrative machinery and callousness of the political executives,” he said.  “I want to ask the functionaries of this government that if there is really a shortfall of energy import from Northern Grid, why the people in Kashmir are only subjected to harsh power cuts, even if they pay more electricity tariff and have far less illegal connections than any other region in the state,” Karra said.

He said the power supply has hit the worst levels since 2002, before which also the NC government had ensured that the state is starved of power. “While power tariff has been hiked manifold by the present regime, the supply has deteriorated in the Valley to the frustrating levels,” he said. Karra said the state’s ruling political elite which is preoccupied with enjoying the luxuries of power while the Aam Aadmi is being subjected to all kinds of cruelties and miseries must remember that they have to go back to the same people to seek mandate again. “The people are fed up with the insensitivity of this self-centered regime and they would respond appropriately to this feeling of utter neglect when the time comes,” he said. Senior PDP leader Qazi Mohammad Afzal also addressed the convention.
