Normal life in Kupwara district in northern part of Kashmir remains disrupted Wednesday due to incessant snowfall in the region from past two days.
As per official figures, in Kupwara, the plain areas received nearly two feet snow while in the upper reaches, it was around four feet.
Reports from Baramulla suggest that nearly two feet snow has accumulated so far. The snowfall is expected to continue till January 26.
Reports from the frontier district said that the snowfall continued incessantly during the night, which lead to closure of major roads in the district.
A shopkeeper from Poshpora village told Kashmir Life over phone that he could not go to his shop at Kupwara town due to non availability of conveyance. “The snow on the road has not been cleared yet and vehicles are halted in their garages.”
The accumulation of snow on roads has restricted people, especially old and children, to their homes. Most of the tuition centres in the district remain closed.
The access to health care has become difficult for the public due to closure to roads.
The already ailing power supply system has been hit badly. The power supply to most of the district has been cut off as the 33000 KV supply line has developed a technical snag. The lack of power supply has created huge crises in the district. The mobile phones and other electronic gadgets are running out on charge. People are complaining that their home UPS systems have also drained out.
District Commissioner Kupwara told Kashmir Life that administration has started clearing snow from roads. The snow clearing machines have been pressed into service. He added that the technical snag in power supply line will be fixed and by evening the power supply to most of the villages will be restored.
Notably, district administration issued snow avalanche warning for sensitive areas.
