Hurriyat Conference (G) activists Friday staged a protest outside Masjid Hamza (RA) Amira Kadal Srinagar against the ‘illegal’ detention of Syed Ali Geelani. Scores of Hurriyat G activists gathered outside Masjid Hamza (RA) soon after the culmination of Friday congregational prayers and amid pro-freedom slogans demanded the immediate release of Hurriyat patriarch Syed Ali Geelani.

Geelani was supposed to deliver a lecture on present political scenario to the people on Friday before the prayers at Masjid Hamza Amira Kadal Srinagar. However, authorities barred him from doing so after placing him under house arrest.

Eyewitnesses told CNS that soon after Friday congregational prayers, Hurriyat G activists led by Mehraj-Ud-Din and Syed Imtiyaz Hyder gathered outside Masjid Hamzah and denounced the house arrest of its Chairman Syed Ali Geelani since Wednesday evening terming it “violation of his democratic and basic rights.”

Syed Imtiyaz Hyder said that when peaceful political activities of people are banned “then a section of people explore other options which increase the political uncertainty in the state.

The activists amid pro-freedom and pro-Geelani slogans demanded his immediate release and said that authorities are deliberately complicating the situation by not providing political space to the octogenarian leader.

The activists tried to take out a march towards city-centre Lal Chowk, however, police sealed the exit points after which they dispersed peacefully.
