Stating that in the absence of a settlement to Kashmir issue, ties between India and Pakistan can not prosper, chairman Hurriyat Conference (M), Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Saturday said that Kashmiris were not averse to better relations between the two neighbouring countries. However, he said that both the countries should understand that without settling Kashmir issue, they can not strengthen their relations.

Addressing a press conference at Lahore airport, Mirwaiz said, “When we come to Pakistan, we feel as if we have come home.” He however added that Pakistan has to take more steps to convince India for settling the Kashmir dispute. “We think India doesn’t want to settle the Kashmir issue. Pakistan must understand it”, said Mirwaiz.

According to local news agency KNS, Mirwaiz said that the coming couple of years were vital for the peace process in the sub continent as America was pulling out its forces from Afghanistan.

“The settlement of the dispute lies ultimately in the dialogue process, therefore dialogue should be taken forward to settle the Kashmir issue.” said Mirwaiz who was flanked by other visiting executive members of his faction.

Mirwaiz added that they had gone to Pakistan to break the ice and see what Pakistani politicians, leadership and people think about the K-Issue. “We have come after 5 long years and what to know what the people of Pakistan are all about.” said Mirwaiz Umar.

Replying to a question Mirwaiz said that New Delhi and Islamabad should revisit the treaties including the water sharing, but was quick to add that all other issues between the two countries were linked to Kashmir dispute.

“To settle your other issue, you have to address the kashmir issue first.” said Mirwaiz.

He said that Kashmir should be a priority for both the countries while sitting on the dialogue table.

Terming Syed Ali Geelani’s turning down the Pak invitation as his personnel decision, Mirwaiz said, that Pakistan government had invited all separatist leaders.
