SRINAGAR: In the wake of the horrific terror attack in Baisaran, Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives and left several injured, the Jammu and Kashmir Council of Ministers convened a high-level meeting on Wednesday, chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, to express collective grief, condemn the violence, and chart a course of action to support the victims and enhance public safety.
Describing the massacre as a “barbaric and cowardly act,” the Council of Ministers issued a strong statement condemning the attack as a direct assault on peace, democratic values, and the shared ethos of unity and brotherhood that underpin Jammu and Kashmir. A two-minute silence was observed to honour the memory of the victims.
“The Government stands in unwavering solidarity with the bereaved families and reaffirms its commitment to justice, security, and the indomitable spirit of resilience that defines our people,” the statement read.
Although security remains primarily under the purview of the Lieutenant Governor’s administration, the Council resolved to closely coordinate with security agencies to ensure safety for all citizens, particularly tourists and residents in sensitive areas.
Key decisions taken during the meeting include the immediate disbursement of ex-gratia relief as previously announced — Rs 10 lakh to the families of the deceased, Rs 2 lakh to the seriously injured, and Rs 1 lakh to those with minor injuries. The Council also committed to ensuring the best available medical care for the injured and dignified transportation of the mortal remains of those killed.
The Ministers appealed to religious leaders, civil society, political organisations, and all communities to remain calm and united and reject hostile forces’ attempts to sow division and destabilise the region. “Let us reject fear and division and reaffirm our commitment to peace, unity, and the timeless spirit of harmony and shared resilience that defines our land,” the resolution stated.
The meeting concluded with a reiteration of the Government’s resolve to bring the perpetrators to justice and protect the lives and liberties of all citizens. The attack, which targeted innocent civilians, most of them tourists, has shaken the Valley but drawn widespread condemnation and calls for unity from across the political and social spectrum.
