SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir has provided 77,170 new or serviced tap connections and delivered sewer and septage management services to 3,32,292 urban households under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs told Parliament on Thursday. The figures, reported by the ministry, are current as on November 20, 2025.
The ministry’s data shows Jammu and Kashmir among Union Territories that have taken forward both water supply and sanitation works under AMRUT and through project convergence. The 77,170 tap connections measure progress on the mission’s core objective of improving urban water supply, while the 3,32,292 sewer and septage management beneficiaries reflect city-level gains in sanitation coverage.
Nationally, the ministry said AMRUT and convergent interventions have delivered 1.88 crore new or serviced tap connections and 1.49 crore sewer or septage management household coverages as on November 20, 2025. Across India, AMRUT projects have created 5,011.55 million litres per day of water treatment plant capacity and 4,754.61 MLD of sewage treatment plant capacity, and have laid 73,519.51 kilometres of water network and 21,754 kilometres of sewer network, the statement added.
AMRUT 2.0, launched on October 1, 2021, aims to expand these gains further. The mission’s indicative outlay is Rs 277,000 crore for five years, including a central share of Rs 76,760 crore. So far State Water Action Plans for 8,804 projects totalling Rs 1,93,427.02 crore have been approved under AMRUT 2.0; the approved projects cover laying or rehabilitation of 1.24 lakh kilometres of water network and 35,801.13 kilometres of sewer network, and include provision for 175 lakh new tap connections and 69 lakh new sewer connections.
The ministry emphasised technical and governance measures intended to make water services sustainable. Cities are preparing City Water Balance Plans and City Water Action Plans that account for projected population in 2025 and resource sustainability. Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems are being promoted — 258 AMRUT water supply schemes already have SCADA, and 1,415 projects approved under AMRUT 2.0 include SCADA provisions to strengthen operations and emergency response.
Capacity building is also a component. The ministry said more than 90,000 contractors, plant operators, plumbers, women, youth and municipal officials have been trained under mission-linked programmes to operate and maintain urban water and sewerage systems.
Monitoring and accountability mechanisms for AMRUT include State High Powered Steering Committees chaired by chief secretaries, State Level Technical Committees, an Apex Committee at the national level, and Independent Review and Monitoring Agencies for AMRUT 2.0. Progress is tracked through the AMRUT online portal and periodic reviews, video conferences and site visits by the Ministry.
