SRINAGAR: Congress MLAs on Friday staged a protest inside the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, displaying banners and demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar as the House began its proceedings.
The legislators raised slogans questioning the conduct of the electoral process, with some members shouting, “Democracy has been murdered.”
The protest came as the Congress continued its nationwide campaign seeking Kumar’s removal as Chief Election Commissioner. The party has alleged irregularities in decisions concerning electoral rolls and has called for an independent review of the process.
The demonstration took place during the ongoing sixth session of the J&K Legislative Assembly, which is scheduled to run from September 21 to September 30, according to the official Assembly portal.
The protest by the Congress legislators brought the party’s demands against the Election Commission into the Assembly as the House resumed its scheduled business.
