SRINAGAR: Jammu Kashmir Assembly Holding Training for First-Time MLAs SRINAGAR: The Jammu Kashmir Assembly is holding a training session for the first-time lawmakers, Jammu newspaper, Daily Excelsior reported.
Out of the 88 MLAs in the 90-member Assembly, 51 are first-time legislators, accounting for more than 50 per cent of the House’s total strength. Among these are individuals who have previously served as Members of Parliament. The session is intended to provide essential guidance to the newcomers, many of whom are unfamiliar with parliamentary decorum and procedures.
The NC, which emerged as the single-largest party with 42 seats, has the highest number of first-time MLAs at 24. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which won 29 seats, has 15 debutants. Other first-time legislators include six Independents, three from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), two from Congress, and one from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
Several of the new MLAs have previous legislative experience at the national or regional level. NC leader and former High Court Judge Hasnain Masoodi, who served as a Member of Parliament from 2019 to 2024, is among them. Others with prior experience include PDP’s Mir Mohammad Fayaz, who was a Rajya Sabha member, and BJP’s Vikram Randhawa, a former member of the now-abolished Upper House of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislature.
