SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Tuesday withdrew three Bills proposing an increase in the salaries and allowances of the Chief Minister, Ministers and Members of the Legislative Assembly following objections from BJP members.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, responding to the objections raised in the House, said the committee that had recommended the proposed increase had not recorded any dissenting note.
Abdullah also accused the BJP members of seeking higher salaries and allowances while bringing the concerns of daily wagers into the debate to politicise the issue.
The Chief Minister said he had not personally favoured the proposed increase and decided to withdraw the legislation after a member objected to it.
“I was never in favour of it. If a single member opposes, it will never pass. I withdraw the Bill,” Abdullah said.
The Assembly subsequently adopted a motion to withdraw the legislation by majority vote.
The three Bills were aimed at enhancing the salaries and allowances of the Chief Minister, Ministers and members of the J&K Legislative Assembly.
