In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Congress urged BJP national leadership, including its office-bearers, to clarify why the promise of restoring statehood has not been fulfilled despite the passage of nearly two years since the Assembly elections and the formation of an elected government.

The party alleged that the BJP had gone silent on the issue after failing to secure a majority in the Assembly elections, and questioned the silence of the party’s Members of Parliament and Members of the Legislative Assembly from Jammu and Kashmir over what it described as a long-pending public demand.

According to the Congress, it has been spearheading the campaign for the restoration of statehood since November 2024 and has organised continuous protests across the Union Territory, including demonstrations at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, demanding the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood.

The party reiterated that restoration of statehood remains one of the most significant political aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and called upon the BJP-led Central Government to honour its commitments on the issue.
