SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Handicapped Association staged a peaceful protest at Srinagar’s Press Enclave on Wednesday, demanding that the government address the long-pending issues and concerns of persons with disabilities.
Association State President Abdul Rashid Bhat called for concrete measures to protect the rights and improve the welfare of persons with disabilities across Jammu and Kashmir.
Bhat demanded the appointment of a Disability Commissioner in the Union Territory, saying the post was necessary to address grievances and ensure the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities.
He also called for an increase in the monthly disability pension to Rs 20,000–Rs 30,000, citing the need for greater financial assistance to members of the community.
The association further sought adequate reservation for persons with disabilities in education, employment and other sectors.
Bhat urged the government to take immediate and concrete steps to fulfil the long-pending demands and ensure the effective implementation of welfare measures.
He said the association would continue to raise the concerns of persons with disabilities until their genuine demands were addressed.
