SRINAGAR: A total of 3,173 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs) have been operationalised in Jammu and Kashmir, while 321 are functional in Ladakh, the Union Government informed the Lok Sabha on Friday.
According to data provided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 1,86,298 AAMs had been operationalised across India as of June 30, 2026, by strengthening existing Sub-Health Centres and Primary Health Centres.
Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of operational AAMs at 23,646, followed by Rajasthan with 14,494, West Bengal with 13,517, Maharashtra with 13,457 and Bihar with 12,444. Jammu and Kashmir accounts for 3,173 centres, while Ladakh has 321.
The information was provided by Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav in response to an unstarred question in the Lok Sabha.
The Government said AAMs provide 12 packages of primary healthcare services, covering reproductive and child healthcare, communicable diseases, non-communicable diseases, palliative and elderly care, common mental health disorders, neurological conditions, substance-use disorders, oral health, ear, nose and throat care and basic emergency services.
To support these services, the essential list has been expanded to include 179 medicines and 63 diagnostic services at PHC-level AAMs, and 113 medicines and 14 diagnostic services at Sub-Health Centre-level AAMs.
The Government also said a recent evaluation of the AAM programme by NITI Aayog found improvements in service delivery and increased community footfall, attributing the gains to expanded access to comprehensive primary healthcare, stronger management of non-communicable diseases, improved general outpatient services and the availability of free medicines and diagnostics closer to people’s homes.
The evaluation also indicated that these measures had contributed to a gradual reduction in out-of-pocket healthcare expenditure.
On maternal and infant mortality, the Government said it had undertaken several measures under the National Health Mission, including the Janani Suraksha Yojana, Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram, Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan, Surakshit Matritva Aashwasan, postnatal care initiatives and Anemia Mukt Bharat.
It also cited nutrition and child health programmes, including Mothers’ Absolute Affection, Lactation Management Centres, Vitamin A supplementation, Home-Based Newborn Care, Home-Based Care for Young Child and Mission Poshan 2.0, as part of efforts to reduce maternal and infant mortality.
