The mission, named Operation Asan, was launched in response to an attack on an Army convoy and was led by Major General Sameer Srivastava of the Army’s 10th Infantry Division. The operation highlights the Army’s growing reliance on unmanned vehicles and artificial intelligence (AI) to secure swift outcomes in counter-terrorism actions.

Phantom, a four-year-old sniffer dog, proved instrumental in the early stages of the operation. On Monday, while detecting explosives hidden by the militants and shielding soldiers from ambush, Phantom sustained fatal injuries from gunfire. His courageous actions not only saved lives but also helped prevent the militants from carrying out a planned large-scale attack. Senior officials commemorated his bravery, stating, “Phantom’s actions were critical to containing the militants, and his sacrifice will be remembered with honour.” A Belgian Malinois dog, Phantom was inducted into this area in August 2022.

The Army’s strategic deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles and AI tools provided crucial intelligence on the militants’ positions, enabling precise targeting and reducing the risk to troops. Reinforcements, including mechanised units and Special Forces, were mobilised in the challenging terrain with dense forests and steep gradients, where BMP vehicles were also employed. These vehicles proved essential for accessing the militants’ stronghold, a forested area near a local village in the Battal region.

Three militants, identified as members of Jaish-e-Mohammed and suspected to be recent infiltrators from across the border, were found in possession of an M4 Carbine, AK-47 rifles, ammunition, and provisions for a prolonged assault. Intelligence reports indicated that their presence signalled plans for a high-impact attack ahead of Diwali. Major General Srivastava commended the efforts of local villagers who provided timely intelligence on the militants’ movements, allowing for a swift and coordinated response.

Army had recovered an M4 Carbine from the slain militants besides other assault rifles and explosive devices. This was the first recovery of an M4 Carbine in Jammu. Other recoveries include Pakistan-made eatables, two AK-47 rifles, eight magazines, one pistol, 20 rounds, one hand grenade, note pads, shoes, blankets, trousers, shorts and a wire cutter.

While the encounter ended without further casualties among the security forces or civilians, Major General Srivastava reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to preventing militant threats in the region. Surveillance has been increased along the Line of Control, with coordinated intelligence efforts focused on deterring infiltration attempts.
