SRINAGAR: The Government of Jammu and Kashmir has introduced the “Transport Subsidy Scheme” to overhaul the region’s ageing public transport system with environmentally friendly and fuel-efficient buses. This initiative aims to tackle increasing pollution levels, reduce traffic congestion, and modernise public transportation.

The scheme offers financial incentives to owners of buses, minibuses, and matadors older than 15 years. Eligible vehicle owners can receive a subsidy of Rs 5 lakh or 16 per cent of the new vehicle’s cost, whichever is lower. The programme specifically promotes the purchase of buses meeting the latest emission standards, ensuring a shift towards cleaner, sustainable transport options.
Applicants must meet specific conditions to qualify, including clearing all government dues such as token taxes and permit fees. Additionally, they must provide proof of scrapping their old vehicles through a certificate from a registered scrap dealer and a chassis cut piece. Approved applicants are required to secure a loan and purchase new vehicles within three months. They must also ensure that their vehicles operate on designated routes for at least five years while submitting regular compliance reports to the Regional Transport Office.
Transport Commissioner Vishesh Paul Mahajan highlighted the scheme’s role in enhancing public transport efficiency and alleviating road congestion. He encouraged eligible vehicle owners to apply promptly, as the scheme is available only for the current financial year.
This initiative marks a significant step in the government’s efforts to promote sustainable transportation and improve urban mobility in Jammu and Kashmir.
