SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Secretariat has admitted a private member’s resolution moved by MLA Javid Hassan Baig seeking that the proposed Baramulla-Uri railway line alignment from Kanispora towards Khanpora/Sheeri be kept in abeyance pending an independent assessment of the corridor.
The resolution calls for a comprehensive geological, geotechnical and seismic evaluation of the proposed stretch before any final decision is taken on the alignment.
According to a communication issued by the Assembly Secretariat, the resolution expresses concern over the proposed alignment and urges the Government of India to defer its finalisation until an independent assessment of the corridor is completed.
It seeks a detailed examination of slope stability, soil bearing capacity, liquefaction potential, seismic vulnerability, drainage conditions and susceptibility to landslides along the proposed alignment.
The Secretariat has further stated that the Government of India should undertake the comprehensive geological, geotechnical and seismic investigation of the corridor forthwith.
The resolution also calls for the alignment to be finalised only after competent technical authorities establish and certify the geological and structural suitability of the proposed corridor and its long-term safety.
