SRINAGAR: LPG consumption among beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) in Jammu and Kashmir increased to 4.27 cylinders per connection in 2025-26, up from 2.92 in 2021-22, according to data tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Monday.
The data, provided by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, showed that the per-connection consumption in Jammu and Kashmir has risen steadily over the past five years, reaching 3.12 cylinders in 2022-23, 3.43 in 2023-24 and 4.03 in 2024-25 before touching 4.27 in 2025-26.
However, a significant number of PMUY beneficiaries in the Union Territory did not take any refill during 2025-26. The number stood at 2,56,386, compared to 1,44,314 in 2021-22.
The number of beneficiaries taking only one refill annually fell to 1,61,188 in 2025-26 from 2,48,089 in 2021-22. Those taking two refills also declined from 2,72,059 to 1,33,690 during the same period.
At the same time, the number of beneficiaries taking three or more refills annually increased from 5,74,385 in 2021-22 to 7,29,282 in 2025-26.
The government said PMUY was launched in May 2016 to provide deposit-free LPG connections to adult women from poor households. As of August 1, 2026, there were around 10.57 crore PMUY connections across the country.
It said LPG consumption is monitored regularly and can vary depending on factors including food habits, household size, cooking practices, prices, availability of alternative fuels and consumer preferences. Nationally, per-connection consumption among PMUY beneficiaries increased from 3.68 cylinders in 2021-22 to 4.71 in 2025-26.
