SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police has secured 52 medals for gallantry, distinguished and meritorious service as part of the Independence Day 2026 honours announced by the Union government.
According to the official list, J&K Police personnel have been awarded 38 Medals for Gallantry (GM), one President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM) and 13 Medals for Meritorious Service (MSM).
The 38 gallantry medals account for the bulk of the awards to J&K Police, recognising acts of courage and gallant service. The President’s Medal for Distinguished Service recognises distinguished service, while the MSM category honours meritorious service.
Among Union Territories, Jammu and Kashmir has the highest number of police medals in the list, with 52 awards, compared with one each for Ladakh and Chandigarh and two for Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
At the national level, police personnel have been awarded 961 medals, including 272 Medals for Gallantry, 83 President’s Medals for Distinguished Service and 606 Medals for Meritorious Service.
Jammu and Kashmir has also figured in the Home Guard and Civil Defence category, with one Medal for Meritorious Service awarded to a personnel from the Union Territory.
Across police, fire service, Home Guard and Civil Defence, and correctional services, the Independence Day 2026 honours include 1,057 medals — 301 for gallantry, 92 President’s Medals for Distinguished Service and 664 for meritorious service.
