SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Police have taken significant actions in separate incidents across the region to combat the growing menace of drug trafficking. In Kupwara, police invoked the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act to attach two residential properties belonging to individuals involved in drug peddling in the border area of Karnah. Meanwhile, in Shopian, three drug peddlers were arrested, and substantial quantities of contraband substances were recovered.
In Kupwara, the attached properties include one in Pingla Haridal, owned by Riyaz Ahmad Shah, and another in Chitterkote Karnah, owned by Jahangir Ahmad Khan. These properties are linked to cases registered under the NDPS Act in 2019 and 2020, respectively, with an estimated combined market value of Rs 40 lakhs. This marks the first time such an action has been taken under the NDPS Act in Karnah, a sensitive border region. The Kupwara Police reiterated their commitment to eradicating drug-related activities and urged the public to cooperate by reporting any suspicious activities.
In Shopian, police arrested three individuals in two separate incidents. Acting on a tip-off, officers raided a residential house in Bonbazar Shopian and arrested two suspects, Bashir Ahmad Sofi and Parvaiz Ahmad Peer, recovering 381 grams of heroin from their possession. In another operation, a police team at Batapora Wachi apprehended Umer Ahmad Bhat during a routine check, seizing 1.8 kilograms of charas.
Cases have been registered in all incidents, and investigations are ongoing to identify potential networks and linkages. The police emphasised their resolve to continue efforts to make communities drug-free and called upon residents to remain vigilant, encouraging collective action against drug abuse and trafficking.
