SRINAGAR: Police fired three rounds at a suspicious Scorpio after it failed to stop at a checkpoint on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Ramban district in the early hours of Friday, with the vehicle later traced but its occupants managing to flee.
The incident occurred near the police naka at Chanderkote, close to JP Gate on NH-44, when the Scorpio, travelling from Srinagar towards Jammu, was signalled to stop.
An official said the vehicle ignored repeated signals, prompting police personnel to fire three rounds as a precautionary measure.
The vehicle subsequently fled towards the Nashri side. It was later traced by security forces, but the occupants had escaped from the spot, officials said.
A joint search operation involving the police, CRPF and Army is underway to locate the occupants. Further investigation into the incident is in progress.
