Jammu Kashmir Police Warns Public Against AI Voice-Cloning Cyber Scams

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police has warned people about a growing cyber fraud tactic involving artificial intelligence-based voice cloning, in which criminals can imitate the voices of relatives, employers or officials to make fraudulent calls or send fake audio messages.

The police advisory cautioned people against trusting unexpected calls solely because the caller’s voice sounds familiar. Cyber criminals can use AI to create convincing imitations and make urgent requests, potentially prompting victims to disclose sensitive information or act without verification.

Police advised people to independently verify such calls by contacting the purported caller through a known telephone number or using another communication channel before responding to any request.

People have also been advised not to share personal, financial or other sensitive information over unsolicited telephone calls.

J&K Police urged families to educate children and elderly members about voice-cloning scams and asked people to report suspicious calls or suspected cyber fraud promptly.

Anyone who falls victim to cyber fraud can contact the national cyber fraud helpline 1930 or report the incident through cybercrime.gov.in, the advisory said.

The police message urged people to think, verify and stay safe while dealing with unexpected calls or audio messages.
