In a written reply, the ministry said the Kendras are part of a national drive to strengthen water conservation efforts. The data lists 712 Jal Shakti Kendras established across the country. By comparison, Uttar Pradesh has 75 Kendras, Rajasthan 41, Madhya Pradesh 50 and Maharashtra 35, while several States and Union Territories report single-digit or zero establishments. The national count covers all States and Union Territories as recorded on the JSA: CTR portal.

The ministry made clear that no separate central funds have been earmarked for the establishment or operation of the Kendras. “Water being a State subject, the aspects related to water resources, including its conservation, are studied, planned, funded and executed by the State Governments themselves,” the reply stated. The Kendras are therefore operated through “pooling of resources, both human and infrastructure,” the ministry added.

The parliamentary record shows Jal Shakti Kendras established in a broad range of States and Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir 20; Andhra Pradesh 26; Gujarat 33; Karnataka 31; Tamil Nadu 38; and Delhi eight, among others. Some hill and north eastern States report small numbers — for example, Sikkim six, Arunachal Pradesh eight and Nagaland eight — while Lakshadweep shows none. The data lists the status as of January 23, 2026.
