Jhelum Water Levels Recede at Key Gauging Stations; Munshi Bagh Remains Above Flood Mark

   

SRINAGAR: Water levels in the River Jhelum declined at several key gauging stations across Kashmir on Friday morning, although the river continued to flow above the flood declaration mark at Ram Munshi Bagh in Srinagar, according to the Irrigation and Flood Control (IFC) Department.

The latest IFC gauge readings showed the water level at Ram Munshi Bagh at 19.07 feet, with the river on a receding trend. The level remained above the flood declaration mark of 18 feet but below the danger mark of 21 feet.

At Sangam, the river level was recorded at 18.89 feet, while Pampore measured 5.13 metres, with both stations also registering falling water levels.

The department said water levels at Asham and Wular witnessed a slight rise but remained below their respective flood declaration marks. Among the tributaries, the Vishow Nallah was rising, Rambiyara and Sindh Nallah were receding, while Lidder and Doodhganga remained largely stable.

The IFC Department said it was maintaining close surveillance of the river system and urged residents, particularly those living along riverbanks and embankments, to stay alert and adhere to official advisories.

Meanwhile, independent weather forecaster Faizan Arif Keng said rainfall was expected to continue across parts of the Jammu region on Friday, with the Chenab Valley, Udhampur, Jammu,Samba and Kathua likely to receive showers.

He said South Kashmir was expected to be the worst-affected area in the Valley, with light to moderate rainfall forecast across most places and isolated locations likely to witness heavy showers.

According to Keng, the rainfall activity is expected to persist until the afternoon before gradually weakening, although scattered showers may continue in some areas until the evening.

He cautioned that intense spells of rain could not be ruled out and warned that the risk of flash floods would remain.
