SRINAGAR: The Cyber Cell of JK Police has unearthed a major online scam, recovered 68 missing or stolen mobile phones worth lakhs of rupees, and resolved online financial fraud cases in Ganderbal.
Throughout the current year, the Cyber Cell of JK Police in Ganderbal received multiple applications and reports from the public regarding missing or stolen mobile phones. Acting on these reports, a Cyber Cell Ganderbal team led by SI Gowhar Nazir and supervised by Addl. SP Ganderbal Malik Aijaz, successfully recovered 68 mobile phones from various locations. Out of these, 50 mobile phones have already been returned to their rightful owners, while the remaining 18 phones are in the process of being handed over.
The Cyber Cell Ganderbal also resolved significant online financial fraud cases, recovering Rs 1,63,449, which was refunded to the victims’ accounts. Additionally, an amount of Rs 11,45,669.08 was put on hold following various complaints.
Moreover, the Cyber Cell resolved over 44 cases related to blackmailing and social media account hacking.
The Cyber Cell Ganderbal urges the public to exercise caution when using mobile phones and other electronic devices to protect themselves from cyber-related frauds and crimes. Victims of cyber-crimes or frauds are advised to immediately register complaints on the online portal cybercrime.gov.in and report incidents to Cyber Cell Ganderbal.
The following cyber precautions are recommended to safeguard against online frauds and crimes:
- Do not share Aadhaar, PAN card, or any finance-related OTPs with anyone.
- Avoid clicking on suspicious links received from unknown sources.
- Do not share your passwords; use strong and secure passwords.
- Enable multi-factor authentication (two-step verification).
- Avoid using public WiFi for financial transactions.
- Limit the sharing of personal information on social media. (ANB)
