SRINAGAR: The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has launched a citywide safety drive to identify and assess dilapidated and structurally unsafe buildings, particularly in the Old City and other areas where large numbers of people live or gather.
JMC Commissioner Devansh Yadav said ward-level teams comprising engineers and enforcement officials have been formed to inspect potentially dangerous structures and submit detailed reports within 15 days.
The teams will examine structural weaknesses, foundations, water seepage, severe deterioration and other safety concerns. Buildings over 50 years old showing signs of serious damage will also be assessed.
Yadav said the JMC would decide further action based on technical reports, with retrofitting or strengthening considered wherever feasible instead of automatically ordering demolition. Structures posing immediate danger will be prioritised for action under the relevant municipal laws.
He said around 15 unsafe buildings had been identified and demolished during the past year.
The Commissioner also announced an AI-based system to detect potholes and other civic problems. Cameras fitted on JMC garbage collection vehicles will scan roads and identify potholes, roadside garbage dumps, fallen poles and similar issues.
The locations will be compiled for field teams to carry out necessary repairs and address civic problems more quickly.(KINS)
