With separatist leaders displaying a united face while calling for a joint rally on July 13 at old city’s Martyrs Graveyard, Police Thursday hinted at foiling separatist program, saying to maintain peace, adequate security measures shall be taken.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Syed Javid Mujtaba Geelani told KNS the police will take all required measures to maintain law and order in old city in view of the separatist rally. “Whatever measures are required by the police to maintain law and order will be for sure taken. Adequate security arrangements shall be taken so that no one is allowed to disturb law and order,” the IGP said.

The separatists leaders including Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik had decided to lead a joint procession from Srinagar’s Grand Mosque on July 13 to mark the “martyrs’ day”.

On this day in 1931, 22 Kashmiris were shot dead by troops of Maharaja Hari Singh outside the Srinagar Central Jail where an in-camera trial of Abdul Qadeer, a non-local chef with a British traveler, charged with sedition, was being held. July 13 is since observed as Martyrs Day on both sides of the Line of Control and is a public holiday. “After consultation among the pro-freedom leadership, it has been decided that the martyrs’ day on July 13 would be observed jointly as Youm-e-Tajdeed (Day of resolve),” Mirwaiz earlier had said.

The IGP Kashmir while commenting over the reports of the security threats reportedly looming large over Amarnath Yatra declared that there is no specific militant threat over this year’s Amarnath Yatra. “There is no need for an alarm. We have taken all measures to ensure safe yatra for the devotees. Further adequate security measures have been taken to the peaceful annual pilgrimage,” Gilani said.

He also said that the checking of vehicles in the city centre on Wednesday was a part of the normal routine and that SOG was not in particular called in to perform the task. “SOG is the part of the state police. It is no separate group. In Lal Chowk and in others areas of Srinagar, frisking was done as a routine coarse and in no way was based on a specific threat,” the IGP said.
