SRINAGAR: The Centre has appointed Justice Pushpendra Singh Bhati as the new Chief Justice of the Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh High Court as part of a set of appointments to the top judicial posts of eight High Courts across the country.
The Union Law Ministry issued formal notifications on Sunday announcing the appointments.
Along with Justice Bhati, seven other judges have been appointed as Chief Justices of different High Courts. They are Justice Valluri Kameswar Rao as Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, Justice Ravindra V. Ghuge as Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, Justice Sanjay Kumar Agrawal as Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court, Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi as Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra as Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Justice Krushna Ram Mohapatra as Chief Justice of the Chhattisgarh High Court, and Justice Alpesh Yeshvant Kogje as Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
The appointments have been made under Article 217 of the Constitution, read with Article 222. The provisions govern the appointment and transfer of judges of High Courts, with the President exercising the appointment powers following consultation with the Chief Justice of India.
Justice Bhati’s appointment places him at the head of the High Court having jurisdiction over the Union Territories of Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh.
