SRINAGAR: The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has voiced strong opposition to the recent changes in the parking policy at Srinagar Airport, citing inconvenience and harassment caused to tourists, travellers, and the local population. In a statement released today, the KCCI urged the Airport Authority to reconsider the policy, which has drawn widespread complaints from both commercial transporters and private vehicle owners.

KCCI highlighted that the new vehicle entry and parking system introduced at the Srinagar Airport has been causing unnecessary delays and discomfort, particularly to tourists who are vital to the region’s recovering economy. The Chamber stressed that the arbitrary charges imposed under the new policy have created a burden on travellers, with commercial operators facing increasing difficulties.
In its latest communication with the Airport Authority of India (AAI), the KCCI referred to a meeting held with the Director of AAI on August 5, 2024, where the issues surrounding the airport’s parking and entry charges were discussed. At that time, KCCI believed that some of the grievances had been addressed, particularly regarding multiple entry and parking fees. However, despite assurances, the situation appears to have worsened.
KCCI reported that after its subsequent meeting with the Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir on August 6, 2024, it was assured of further intervention, particularly after the conclusion of Independence Day celebrations. Nevertheless, KCCI continues to receive numerous complaints from travellers and commercial operators alike, who claim that the exorbitant and arbitrary fees remain in place, with little to no resolution in sight.
“Why and under what circumstances the toll post beyond the parking area has been installed is baffling,” KCCI stated. The Chamber pointed out that such toll posts and parking systems are unprecedented in other parts of the country and the world, labelling it an act of discrimination against the people of Kashmir. The KCCI expressed disappointment that the new policy contradicts the national principle of “One Nation One Policy” and is further damaging Kashmir’s reputation as a tourist destination.
Business owners and commercial operators are particularly concerned, with many threatening to halt services beyond Gate No. 1 of the Srinagar Airport if the current system persists. The chamber emphasized that the new policy not only hinders tourism growth but also disrupts essential business and private travel, at a time when tourism in Kashmir has seen a long-awaited revival.
KCCI has demanded that the recently installed toll post be removed immediately and the previous parking system restored. The Chamber warned that if these demands are not met, the new charges would effectively become a “Kashmir Entry Cess,” creating further resentment among both locals and tourists.
KCCI remains hopeful that the issue will be resolved soon, calling for swift action from the authorities to ensure that Srinagar Airport remains accessible and welcoming to all visitors.
