Referring to the speech of Prime Minister Narendra Modi wherein he called Kashmir “mini India”, Chairperson All Parties Hurriyat Conference (g), Syed Ali Geelani said Wednesday termed it “completely wrong and meaningless”.

“Kashmir is international dispute and a separate entity altogether, where people have been enslaved at the barrel of gun only,” Geelani said in a Hurriyat Conference statement this evening.

“His slogan of Insaaniyat (humanity), Jamhooriyat (democracy) and Kashmiriyat (composite Kashmiri culture) is just a lip service as Kashmiris were brutally killed; women sexually assaulted; properties worth billions looted and torched and thousands of youth were subjected to forced disappearance at the hands of Indian forces. So the meaning of such slogans carries no weight when it comes to Kashmir,” Geelani added.

Geelani, who is under continuous house detention since he returned from New Delhi early this month, said, “The voice and rights of the people of Jammu Kashmir cannot be muzzled and suppressed and that people would strive to fight for their rights till the issue is resolved in accordance with their aspirations.”

“J&K has a century old tradition of brotherhood between different religions but inspite of that, calling Kashmir a ‘mini India’ stands invalid and absurd as far as the history of Kashmir is concerned,” he claimed. “Kashmir was never a part of India and from 1947, by its military might, India captured Kashmir, which has no moral or constitutional authority and the people of Kashmir never accepted Indian sovereignty since last seven decades other than to struggling for their just cause.”

In response to the slogan of ‘Kashmiriyat’, Geelani said, “although we have a wonderful and unique religious, cultural, social tradition here but by calling Kashmiri a ‘mini India’ is part of larger strategy to eliminate our unique identity and India is hell bent to impose its culture on Kashmiri people to strengthen their illegal rule.”

He alleged that government “patronizes the social evils like alcohol, drugs and waywardness under the garb of Kashmiriyat and is a deep rooted conspiracy to make identity crisis in valley”.
