SRINAGAR: A day after Kashmir University’s Vice Chancellor, Nilofar Khan, claimed that her convoy was “attacked” near Zakura on the outskirts of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir Police issued a statement contesting this account. Vice Chancellor Khan, who was appointed the first female head of Kashmir University in May 2022, alleged that while returning from a meeting with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday evening, a bullet struck her escort vehicle around 7 pm, prompting her security team to respond with retaliatory fire. “Thankfully, I was unharmed,” Khan told UNI, adding that it was now for the police to investigate the incident.

In a post on X, Srinagar Police stated that, after conducting a thorough search of the area, they found no evidence to corroborate the Vice Chancellor’s report. Police parties dispatched to the scene reportedly found no bullet marks or other indications of an attack. “The report about attack on the VC of Kashmir University last evening near Zakura could not be corroborated, factoring in all possible circumstances,” the police said.
The police added that witnesses near the site, including officers stationed at a nearby checkpoint, reported hearing no gunfire apart from rounds fired by Khan’s security personnel, who appeared to have responded out of perceived suspicion. Police stated that the incident is still under investigation, though initial findings indicate no signs of an attack.
